Here’s another look at a possible fireplace for these homeowners.

[A more interesting storage area for firewood.]

I also took a very un-symmetrical look at the sides and a random edge on the right . . . more of a unpolished, rugged look. I want to get away from all that pretty symmetry of the “lick-n-stick” fireplaces being built these days.

The other two posts show earlier sketches(and here) for this project. The homeowner has seen these(as of yesterday) and likes the above concept the best.

    As a Contractor and Stone Mason who specializes in the construction of Rumford masonry fireplaces in the Boston, MA area, I find your fireplace sketch very refreshing.
    I love the rustic, almost abstract, design.

    I agree with your thoughts that fireplace designs today are too uniform and symetrical. I would like to see (and build)more “outside the envelope” designs like yours.

    I don’t if you are familiar with Rumford fireplaces. If not, I would like to suggest that you check them out. Rumford fireplaces are more popular now than at any time since 1850. With the high cost of heating fuel, the legendary and proven heating efficiency of the Rumford fireplace is extremely attractive to those who are building, remodeling, or restoring their homes and are concerned about rising heating costs.
    Also, with global warming and the environment of great concern to everyone, it is important to note that Rumford fireplaces are one of the very few clean-burning masonry fireplaces. Rumfords have been laboratory tested and meet or exceed wood burning appliance emission standards and regulations making them vastly more environmentally friendly than standard fireplaces

    Thank you for stopping by and sharing your opinion(s) with me and my fellow readers. I am familiar with the Rumford design and am glad you “reminded” me of this option-for this project.

    I will take a look at your site, and get back to you. I can tell you we are going to build something very rustic/abnormal/not-the-usual . . . they’re that kind of client. It appears at this point it will be a fun project, adding in all the other boulder(s) work, slab steps, and interesting drive/parking area.

    Handcarved headstones are no doubt the best chioce available, all in various types of stone the hand carving adds a certain personal element to the memorial/monument. Personally stonework created using only machines doesnt have the same level of creativlty in my opinion.

    I like the term ‘lick-n’stick’!

    I think this fireplace design is pretty beautiful and lets the stone do the talking.
